What do you want to be when you grow up?

We all had this question several times during our childhood. I remember my first answer was: Train Driver! I spent hours playing with trains and building different rails all over my house. After a while, my answer changed a little bit. ‘Now I want to become an architect, and I want to build a huge house for all my family’.

I find it very funny. I am sure we all had our own answers. I heard very good ones as well.

I want to be Spider-Man!

I will be an airplane.

I want to be Shakira.

I will become the most famous pirate.

I want to be meatballs maker!

You can watch here some of the most original answers:

When we are kids we are very innocent and we believe this is a very easy question. But obviously, like many other things, the answer to the question gets complicated with the time.
During a certain period of time, normally when we are teenagers, we start to develop more serious arguments for our decisions.

I remember I had very clear I wanted to become a psychologist. But then, next year I was sure I wanted to be a Movie Producer. It really changed a lot along the time. On the other hand, a lot of people had it very clear since the beginning (like if I would have become a train driver) and they know since the very beginning what they want to become in their lives.

If you think about it, it is such an important question… With different words, when people were asking you this, they were asking you what do you want to do with your life and to this big question, an answer like: I want to be Spider-Man, sounds quite reasonable for me. An ambitious answer to an ambitious question. Probably this kid will not become the famous superhero that is going to save the whole city from the villains. But maybe this answer can reveal some of the ambitions for his life. Maybe he/she just want to express that he likes freedom, that will be a creative person, that will care about people… don’t you think?
Maybe when I said I wanted to drive trains my whole life I was actually expressing that I will be a traveler. Or maybe when I said I wanted to become a psychologist I was just showing that I like to help people.

It is clear that our answer may not match our final decision in life, but if you think about it, at the end, it is not a no way decision. A lot of people decide to make a change in their career even after years working for something. The most important thing is that we all respect our timing in life and that we keep that braveness inside of us.

Remember when you were a kid and you were not afraid to say want you wanted to be or to say that you have changed your opinion. This is something that we need to keep present. As it is said, it is never too late to be the person you wanted to be.
